Surrogate

For more than 20 years, surrogate women have been having babies for childless couples with much success. If you haven't already heard about surrogate babies, you might be wondering how the whole process works.

Surrogate mothers, women who will carry a child to term, deliver the baby and then give the baby to the childless couple, are women who have a strong desire to help a couple who is infertile or cannot have children on their own. When a couple and surrogate mother enter into a surrogate agreement, they must make the choice of whether or not to have one of the two types of surrogate processes, traditional or gestational.

Traditional Surrogate

A traditional surrogate is when the surrogate mother is artificially inseminated with sperm and uses her own ovum for fertilization. This makes the surrogate mother biologically related to the child she is carrying to term.

Years ago, this was the only surrogate process available. It was sometimes difficult for a surrogate mother to disconnect herself from the baby because the baby was biologically related to her. Although some women are able to do this, some couples felt uneasy with the idea that the surrogate mother had a biological connection or they wanted their baby to be biologically connected to them.

The traditional surrogate process is the least intrusive and the easiest to perform. The surrogate mother is sometimes given a hormone shot to bring on ovulation and then she is artificially inseminated or AI, with the sperm from the couple.

Gestational Surrogate

With the gestational surrogate process, the surrogate mother is not biologically related to the baby in any way. She is artificially inseminated with an embryo by in vitro fertilization or IVF.

The ovum and the sperm are used from the couple who is entering into the surrogate agreement so the child is biologically related to them. If either the sperm or the ovum is not viable with either of the parents, it may be donated by another source.

The gestational surrogate process is a lot more expensive than the traditional surrogate process because it involves harvesting the ovum from the perspective donor, whether it is from the couple or from another source, fertilizing the egg with sperm and then transplanting the fertilized egg to the surrogate mother's uterus.

Although the actual transfer of the embryo is quick, the weeks before and after transplantation of an embryo are more involved than with the traditional surrogate process. The surrogate mother needs to be monitored. She must go through the process of stopping her own ovulation with birth control pills and then preparing her uterus to accept the embryo by taking shots of estrogen to thicken her uterine wall.

Whether through a traditional or gestational surrogate process, the end result is the same. The surrogate mother has the satisfaction of knowing that she has helped a childless couple fulfill their desire of having a family. The parents of a surrogate baby have the child they always dreamed of having.
