Pay for Surrogate Mothers
The decision to become a surrogate mother is an individual one and needs to be made with utmost seriousness and care. When a woman decides to become a surrogate mother and carry a child to term for a couple, she is giving up her body to do as she pleases for nine plus months of her life. This a job that is unlike the normal 9 to 5 job that most of us have. It requires the surrogate mother to be “working” 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until the baby is born.
Because of that, women are compensated for their time and the toll being a surrogate mother takes on their body and their lives for the time before and during their pregnancy. The amount of pay a woman receives varies, but can range from $25,000 to as much as $35,000. Payment depends on several factors including whether or not the surrogate mother is a first time surrogate or if this is a second or third surrogate pregnancy for them. Other factors might also come into play warranting addition monies that might include specific state laws or whether the surrogate is carrying twins.
Pay for surrogate mothers is delivered in several ways, usually in installments over the course of the pregnancy. Once the valid contract is signed, a portion of the money is given to the surrogate mother to start the process of fertilization. At that point, IVF or artificial insemination will begin and continue until a viable pregnancy is confirmed by the surrogate mother’s doctor.
Once the viable pregnancy is confirmed, the surrogate mother will receive another payment. Many times a portion of the money will continue to be paid to the surrogate mother on a monthly basis in accordance with the surrogacy contract until the baby is born, with the final payment being delivered once the baby is born.
Each agency distributes the money to the surrogate mother based on their policies, what the surrogate has negotiated and the guidelines of the law in the state where the surrogacy is taking place. At no time does the surrogate mother assume responsibility for any medical expenses for their pregnancy or for the delivery of the baby. That is the responsibility of the parents who have hired the surrogate mother.
Other items that the surrogate mother might be compensated for during the pregnancy are maternity clothes up to a certain dollar amount included in the surrogacy contract, and travel to medical appointments if they are more than 2 ½ hours from the surrogate mother’s home.
Most women do not enter into an agreement to become a surrogate mother for financial reasons. Women who are motivated to become a surrogate mother by a strong desire to help a couple who can’t otherwise have a child of their own, realize the biggest reward. However, becoming a surrogate parent does have a financial benefit as well.
